3D printing Kinect laptop mounts

Posted on Oct 3, 2012

With the recent arrival of our Solidoodle 3D Printer we have been looking for interesting uses for it. After flicking through the awesome shared offering of Thingiverse we came across some useful Kinect related ideas.
There were plans for all kinds of Kinect mounts, for the ceilings, TV, tripods and some really interesting alignment mounts for DSLR and Kinect so you can line up high res imagery to your depth feed.

Starting out with an easy one, we printed some laptop screen mounts. These are really handy if you don’t want to lug around your tripod and have to demo content on the go with just your laptop and camera. The print came out pretty decent, solid and able to take the weight of the Kinect with ease while not blocking the built in webcam. All in all a useful build. Next up we will be printing a Kinect DSLR alignment mount.

If you have yourself a 3D printer you can jump on over to the Thingiverse page and download the STL here.

Fantastic, I’ve been thinking about buying a 3D printer over the last few months to make bits for my telescopes and Kinect experiments.
How are you finding the solidoodle to use?

To be honest the Solidoodle is a little bit of getting used to. Took me a while to get the settings right, lots of searching though blogs and forums to find hints and tips and the print quality isn’t as good as some of my mates prints. That being said it was only 700 AUD to get here from the U.S. and is still really handy for printing bits and pieces.
I think my next printer will be a Formlabs stereo lithography printer.
